"The majestic
cliffs and mountains
forming the cañon-walls
display endless variety
of form and sculpture,
and are wonderfully
adorned and enlivened
with glaciers and
waterfalls, while
throughout almost
its whole extent the
floor is a flowery
landscape garden..."

Ah,
Spring in Alaska!
Mid
April marks the beginning
of the shorebird migration
when tens of thousands
of birds use the Stikine
River Delta as an important
refueling stop as they
make their way along the
Pacific flyway. The largest
spring concentration of
Bald Eagles in North America
is found on the grass flats
of the Stikine as they
congregate for the feast
of spawning Eulachon, a
small fish of the smelt
family. Lets
go on a birding trip! |

The
big freeze is over!
Wildlife
is beginning to emerge.
Bears wander the beaches
in search of fresh greens.
The many varieties of ferns
unfurl their fiddleheads
as the forest "greens up"
and the bright yellow "swamp
lanterns" emerge from mossy
pools. The birds
are still migrating through
and begin to liven the
forest with their music
as we all rejoice
at the lengthening days. Lets
go hike the Mill Creek
trail on a History
& Adventure outing! |

The
days are long and the wildflowers
are dazzling!
From
the forest to the wetlands,
the wildflowers are putting
on their show. The
vacciniums (blueberries
- 4 kinds!) with their
tiny urn shaped blossoms
are feeding the hummingbirds
and the dwarf dogwood carpets
the sun dappled forest
floor. Orchids,bog
rosemary, pretty shooting
stars, and my favorite
bog kalmia all make their
appearance this month.
Photographers, bring your
film!
Lets
go on a wildflower walk
in the muskeg as we explore
Wrangell Island and hike
the trail to Long Lake! |

Famous
for the 4th !
Nothing
beats a small town celebration
to round out your visit.
Wrangell is famous for
it's 4th of July festivities
perhaps because for most
Alaskans "Independence"
is their middle name! Cool
off with a naturalist guided
trip to LeConte, Shakes
or Great Glacier! |

Did
somebody say wildlife?
Take
your pick of brown
or black bear - either
can be spotted as
the wildlife congregates
along the fish streams
for this seasonal
feast. To round out
the show, eagles,
otters, mink, &
martin,seals and lots
of gulls take advantage
of the leftovers.
Anan Wildlife Observatory
is a world class resource
for wildlife viewing.
A show not to be missed.
Combine
your trip to Anan
with a Forest Ecology
Walk!

Relax!
As
the season winds down
and we begin to say
good-bye to our summer
friends, we head north
into British Columbia,
during the last weeks
of the month, away
from the increasing
coastal rains. This
year, we have decided
to share our most
favorite trip with
a few of our guests.
Join us on our fall
farewell adventure
as we head to breezy
blue skies and the
delicious perfume
of autumn in the interior.

Outings!
