Explorer
Outing
...Telegraph
Creek, British Columbia!
There
is a unique magic
to fall in the north.
A sweet calm settles
in as the long days
are slowly fading.
This fall Explorer
Outing
is
one that we've made
over the last 3 years
with friends as a
final reward for our
summertime frenzy
of activity.
As
we head north up the
Stikine River valley
into British Columbia,
and away from the
coastal weather, we
enter a whole new
landscape of boreal
forest painted with
golden aspen.
The rich aroma of
highbush cranberry
perfumes the air.
Along the 160 mile
trip to our destination
in the Mt. Edziza
Provincial Park, we
pass through a living
landscape of glaciers
and river valleys
carving granite and
basalt into what John
Muir referred to as
"a Yosemite Valley
100 miles long".
This
trip combines the
best of all Alaskan
(and Canadian) experiences
- a boat ride or flight
up river, winding
our way through glaciers
and mountains,
a flightseeing trip
over the Grand
Canyon of the Stikine
River and Mt.
Edziza with it's
surreal cinder cones,
a float plane landing
on a remote lake,
and backpacking
our way out along
the historic Telegraph
Trail. We end
our trip with a stay
at the River Song
Lodge which is
operated out of the
old Hudson Bay
Trading Post building,
a wonderful glimpse
into the rich history
of the area.
